Sisterhood: The Family We Choose

Building a Chosen Sisterhood

Sisters don’t always share our blood — sometimes, they share our hearts.
Over time, I’ve learned that sisterhood isn’t just about who we’re born to, but who we walk beside. Some of my dearest sisters are the ones I’ve chosen — women of faith, friends who’ve carried me through grief, laughter, and life’s uncertain moments.

When Life Brings Us Together

Recently, a friend’s mother passed away. She’s an only child, like me, and as our small group of friends came together to help her, I couldn’t help but think about what it means to walk through loss without siblings.
There’s a quiet understanding that comes from being an only child — the weight of facing those future moments alone. But that day reminded me: we are never truly alone.

Showing Up, Even When We Can’t Stay Long

My kids were sick, so I couldn’t stay very long, but I wanted to show up in whatever way I could. I baked chess bars to bring to the gathering, while other friends brought chicken and dumplings, sausage balls, and other comforting dishes — the kind that feeds both the heart and the stomach.

She asked me to print a poem to tuck into the photo album she was putting together — a small, heartfelt reminder of all the love that surrounded her mom that day.

Another friend helped decorate and organize the church. Watching everyone contribute their piece of comfort reminded me how beautiful community can be when it comes together in love.

The Perfect Goodbye

The pastor’s message was one of the most powerful I’ve ever heard at a funeral — heartfelt, honest, and full of hope. It was perfect.
After the service, I stepped outside to watch all the children playing on the church playground. The sound of their laughter rose above the stillness, and I thought, this is exactly what a grandmother would have wanted — joy, life, and love continuing on.

Chosen Sisters

Maybe being an only child has made me value my friendships differently. My chosen sisters — near and far — are the family I’ve built through love, faith, and shared moments.

Fostering these relationships makes my life feel richer and more meaningful. Sisterhood isn’t about who shares your last name — it’s about who shows up, who prays with you, who listens, who laughs, and who reminds you that you’re not walking through life alone.
